Movie Sleeve and Menu Design

DVD/BluRay sleeve and Interactive Menu

Summary

I worked on a team project to create a DVD/BluRay sleeve and interactive menu for the movie Prometheus, a sci-fi movie directed by Ridley Scott. The goal was to create a convincing looking product, that may resemble something that would be available for retail, using available resources on the internet (thanks inter-webs!) I developed the idea, and led my classmates on the design direction, look and feel for the covers, and DVD menus.

Role/Tools

I worked on a team of three people,  came up with the idea to do Prometheus for the project.  Additionally, I spearheaded the ideation in regards to the subject matter for my group, and provided the overall direction for the screens, and concept, in addition to doing work in Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Flash.

Covers

Every single element was placed/designed including logos;  we found images from the internet, and arranged placement of them.

Our method here, was to create layers, and use an existing image of a movie sleeve cover as a guide.  It required lots of layers, and patience. I believe it came out well! We created two versions - one for a DVD box, and another for the BluRay box.

Both had different dimensions, and some different formatting requirements.

Here it is, printed out and placed on DVD and Blu-Ray boxes:

DVD Menus

We created an interactive menu using Flash, and incorporated our Photoshop elements, along with sound, to create a multimedia experience. The font used was called the Prometheus font, from dafont.com.  Some screens were deemed more successful than others.  Where applicable, notes of improvement will be mentioned.

Main screen

We selected some of the images that were available on the internet, that seemed iconic for this film.  The encounter with the giant statue head was definitely a winner for the main screen. Using the Prometheus font, loaded into Photoshop, we create the following image, adding some filter-effects to give the words a bit of flair.

Scenes

We selected available images from the internet, and collaborated on titles that we can call a few of the scenes labeled here. The scene titles in white, with the cyan background color doesn't contrast much, making it challenging to read.

An improvement would be to create dark rectangle , with a shadow on the backgruond image for the scene titles, giving the wording a floating-augmented-reality button effect, to promote easier readability.  Another possibility would be to add prominent shadow to the words .

Language Selection

In the film, this screen represented different languages of ancient earth cultures that all shared a common piece of information, about the Engineers visiting Earth.

We felt this image was a perfect representation for the language screen.

Conclusion

This was a fun project to do!   In addition to the visual items mentioned above, we also used Audition to edit/mix background music, which played on the Main screen. We also had sound effects for the mouse/over for the clickable items throughout the interactive menu.

While some elements where more successful than others, we developed a decent proficiency with the tools that we used, and also worked well as a team to accomplish the different parts of the project.
